Angels Trumpet / Moon Flower
Angels Trumpet or Moon Flower (Datura)
There are several diffrent types of Datura and they are all very difficult to discern from each other. I have three different types growing in my yard. they are considered a noxious weed and the entire plant is poisonous. Datura can not be found in garden centers or for sale. All daturas produce tropane alkaloids that affect the nervous system. Datura is a member of the nightshade family that has been used for centuries as an herbal medicine to relieve asthma symptoms and as an analgesic during surgery or bone setting. It is also a powerful hallucinogen and deliriant, that is used spiritually for the intense visions it produces. In ancient India the plant was considered sacred and belived to be a favorite of the Hindu god Shiva. To this day it is still revered in India and can been see planted in and around temples. The tropane alkaloids that are responsible for medicinal and hallucinogenic properties are fatally toxic. Miscalculation of just slightly higher amounts than the correct medical dosage can result in death. this is not a plant you want a child pet or live stock around. Datura has lots of other common names such as local weed sacred thorn apple and devils trumpet. Datura can be found throughout the world and is often confused with Brugmansia a tropical plant that looks a lot alike.
